Experimental music is a broad genre that includes many subgenres, most notably noise-rock and noise. The reason for the name is that the artists and groups generally do not constrain themselves to a simple way of playing their instruments, adding large amounts of distortion pedals to the guitars and utilizing feedback and other advanced techniques to get different sounds, using multiple drummers (especially Boredoms), using jazz instruments along with rock instruments, using various electronic components (many times homemade) to achieve a new sound, and much, much more. Also utilized often are random or nonsense lyrics (Boredoms are noted for rarely using lyrics in any language, staying with screaming and babbling, Melt-Banana typically has lyrics that, as vocalist and writer Yasuko O. claims, are mainly random ones from an English dictionary that are strung together to convey a meaning she enjoys (the meanings of the words are also sometimes looked at), and the duo Ruins seems to make up their own language as they go). A number of bands that do progressive-style music are also listed here (for example, BORIS, whose more recent work is definitely inspired by progressive music, with songs ranging from 7 to 30 minutes long), sometimes simply because--although this isn't the only reason--of their work with other experimental artists.
